According to the Workplace, open communication refers to each person who is contributing to a conversation being able to do so in a constructive manner, without fear of retribution. This type of communication has the potential to build strong work relationships, when applied effectively and is one of the key ingredients to building strong relationships.
In an office setting open communication refers to:
Formal communication – information shared in a formal way in scenarios such as recruitments, formal promotions and employee performance.
Internal communication – occurs when the leadership of an organisation addresses the employees of a company as a whole, through various platforms. In addition the dialogue between employees and leaders is also a feedback channel, where information is processed.
Interpersonal communication – when teams and leaders interact in an informal way in the workplace. This type of communication normally takes place between individuals who have established a professional or personal relationship.
A survey by Fierce discovered 86 percent of respondents blame lack of collaboration or ineffective communication for workplace failures. Here are 5 advantages of open communication:
Better relationships
Open communication helps reduce conflict at work by creating ways for employees to listen and hear one another. Some companies have diverse staff from different cultures around the world. When open lines of communication are facilitated by management, it leads to a more united workplace. In addition leaders who are experienced with conflict resolution can act as mediators in the event of conflict or misunderstandings.

Growth and accountability
When employees operate in an environment that encourages accountability, it becomes a norm. Failing forward will become a stepping stone to success when there is a culture of learning from mistakes in a company – when staff are able to share their challenges without fear of negative consequences, so that everyone benefits in the long run.
Promotes inclusion
According to experts, employees who believe their opinion is valued by the company’s management are usually more likely to offer constructive feedback. Often employees are reluctant to share suggestions, opinions or concerns when they believe it will not be well received; open communication provides a way for employees to feel part of the team and as valued members of a company.
Leading by example
Leading by example is a great way to promote open communication – active engagement by managers and directors in this type of interaction will be seen as a green light for the company to follow suit.
Minimise company challenges
When there is open communication in companies, leaders will be more likely to receive new information to solve challenges. A lack of communication will lead to the problems multiplying, if not addressed.
