The CEO of bp Southern Africa, Taelo Mojapelo, received the coveted Top Women Business Leader of the Year 2023 at this year’s Standard Bank Top Women Awards.
The awards ceremony took place on November 7 at the Sandton Convention Centre, where the extraordinary achievements of women leaders as well as the organisations that support and empower them were honoured.
The Standard Bank Top Women Business Leader of the Year celebrates a female business leader who “shows astute business acumen, strategic foresight, and a passion for gender empowerment.
The award recognises women who have demonstrated excellent business achievement while also implementing creative strategies to empower other women—they are inspirational leaders who use their platform to drive economic and social empowerment for others.
In a press release, bpSA stated that Taelo’s commitment to transformation and values-based leadership at bpSA has created a resilient organisation amidst the energy industry’s transition to net zero.
“She actively supports and sponsors the diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda, ensuring teams recognise people’s individuality while promoting a high-performance culture, as demonstrated by the successful implementation of key strategic imperatives.” – bpSA.
Taelo said she was honoured to be counted alongside the phenomenal women who have received this award over the past twenty years.
“While there’s so much more to be done, the calibre of women leaders that these awards acknowledge is a testament to the fact that our country is making good progress in transforming the business landscape, especially in the empowerment of women,” she said.

She added that the award is a recognition of the collective efforts of bp globally and her supportive leadership team in Southern Africa. The organisation was also a finalist in the category of Standard Bank Top Women Business of the Year 2023.
“bpSA is committed to increasing the diversity of its employees, especially given the historically male-dominated nature of the energy industry. In South Africa, policies to promote diversity and inclusion are vital in an effort to correct a long history of unequal opportunities.”
