It all began in the United States of America in 1955, in a small butcher shop in Maywood, Illinois. There, our founder, Ray Kroc, sealed the deal with McDonald’s first beef supplier with a handshake and received his first burger patties on credit.
Since then, McDonald’s has opened restaurants all over the world, never forgetting our commitment to Quality, Service, Cleanliness and Value (QSC&V). At the heart of everything we prepare, every ingredient our suppliers provide, and every person that works with us, is our focus on delivering the high quality meals that our customers expect.
To feed the nation and be our consumers’ First Choice by being their favourite place and way to eat and drink.
“McDonald’s has a legacy of high standards grounded in the values we believe in as a company and act upon as individuals” – Jim Skinner, former McDonald’s CEO
From the beginning, we’ve been a company committed to doing the right thing. Today, our seven values continue to be the foundation for who we are, what we do, and how we operate.
We place the customer experience at the core of what we do
Our customers are the reason for our existence. We demonstrate our appreciation by providing them with high quality food and superior service, in a clean, welcoming environment, with great value. Our goal is outstanding Quality, Service, Cleanliness and Value for each customer, every time.
We are committed to our people
We provide the opportunity, recognise talent, and develop leaders. We believe that a diverse team of well-trained individuals working together in an environment that fosters respect and drives high levels of engagement is essential to our continued success.
We believe in the McDonald’s system
McDonald’s business model, depicted by the “three-legged stool” of the McDonald’s Corporation, our Owner Operators and our Suppliers. It is our foundation, and the balance of interests among the three groups is key.
We operate our business ethically
Sound ethics is good business. At McDonald’s, we conduct our business and hold ourselves to the highest possible standards of fairness, honesty, and integrity. We are individually accountable and collectively responsible.
We give back to our communities
At McDonald’s we take the responsibility that comes with being a leader very seriously. We help our customers build better communities; we support Ronald McDonald’s House Charities (RMHC) and leverage our size, scope and resources to help make the world a better place. We are committed to sustainable business practices and are determined to conduct our operations in a matter that does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
We grow our business profitably
Our stakeholders support our ability to serve our customers. In return, we work to provide sustained, profitable growth for all members of our system and our investors.
We strive to continually improve
We consider ourselves a learning organisation that is ‘green and growing’, that anticipates and responds to changing customer, employee, system and community needs through constant evolution and innovation.
Employees have the resources they need to serve the customer.

McDonald’s is renowned for its training throughout the world. We have trained and employed over 10 000 South Africans at various levels, including franchisees, restaurant managers and crew. Currently more than 80% of all food served in McDonald’s restaurants is produced by local South African suppliers (according to our highest quality standards).
