Leadership is about sharing, not protecting, what you know.

By Fazila Bismilla, Director at FazMedia.

For me, leadership has never simply been about holding a position or having a title. It is about having a vision, understanding your purpose and creating opportunities for others to grow alongside you.

Having spent more than two decades in the media industry, I have had the privilege of watching the South African media landscape evolve dramatically. I have worked with leading brands, agencies and media houses and have seen the industry move from predominantly traditional platforms to an environment where television, digital, mobile, print and outdoor media all play important roles in connecting brands with consumers.

That experience ultimately led me to start FazMedia. I wanted to build a business based on what I had learned throughout my career: that successful media is not simply about selling advertising space, it is about understanding a client’s business, identifying the right audience and strategically positioning their brand where it can have the greatest impact.

But my vision for FazMedia has grown beyond building a successful media business. One of the areas I feel particularly passionate about is developing women within the media industry. Over the years, I have seen many talented women enter the workplace with tremendous potential, yet they do not always have the confidence, guidance or practical industry knowledge needed to progress into more senior roles. Sometimes what is missing is simply someone willing to teach them – not only how media works, but how to navigate the industry.

Media can initially seem complicated. There are different platforms, audiences, buying models, strategies and relationships to understand and my goal is to help women develop that knowledge and, more importantly, the confidence to use it.

I want the women who work alongside me to understand the why behind what they are doing. I want them to learn how to speak confidently to clients, understand a brief, recommend the right media solution, negotiate, build relationships and ultimately become strong media professionals in their own right.

To me, this is where the real value of women in leadership becomes evident. Leadership should not be about protecting what you know – it should be about sharing it. When women in senior positions actively mentor and develop other women, we create a cycle of knowledge, confidence and opportunity.

I also believe women bring something incredibly valuable to leadership: the ability to combine commercial thinking with empathy, communication and relationship-building. In an industry such as media, where understanding people is at the heart of what we do, these qualities are powerful.

My vision for FazMedia is therefore not only about where the business can go, but about who we can take with us.

If the experience I have gained throughout my career can help another woman understand the industry, discover her strengths, grow in confidence and eventually become a leader herself, then that is a legacy worth building, because ultimately, leadership with purpose is not measured only by what you achieve – it is measured by how many people you empower to achieve after you.
