While there is still a way to go, South Africa continues to see an increase in females registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
Among the women paving the way for many others hoping to join this field is Portia Phalane, Founder and Managing Director of Sue Phalane Trading and Projects.
A pioneer in the civil engineering field, Portia scooped the Standard Bank Top Women Young Achiever Award for 2023—an accolade that celebrates the outstanding achievement of young women leaders.
A young woman who demonstrates remarkable potential, good business acumen, and strategic insight, as well as a strong desire to expand their organisation, create jobs, and contribute to the economy, is honoured with the award.
Portia is described as a visionary leader defying age barriers in the industry and has blazed a trail of remarkable achievements.
“Spearheading an organisation in a male-dominated industry, Portia has strategically made an indelible mark in her efforts to blaze a trail through the confinements of gender exclusion and mass youth unemployment through her quest to not only inspire but also to lift many as she rises,” said the organisation.
Her commitment to empowering women and young individuals, implementing innovative strategies, and unwavering dedication to driving change in the construction and infrastructure industry set her apart as a young achiever to watch.
Portia’s passion for construction and infrastructure development stems from her desire to create and make a positive impact. Growing up, she aspired to build bridges and change the world.
She attended President Mangope Technical High School and excelled in technical drawing and building construction. She eventually pursued a National Diploma in Civil Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology, which paved the way for her future career. She went on to acquire a B.Tech. in civil engineering.
It was in April 2012 when the entrepreneurial bug hit her, resulting in the establishment of Sue Phalane Trading and Projects (Pty) Ltd. Over the past 11 years, she has led her company to great success, demonstrating that her change from junior technician to visionary leader was the right one.

Under her leadership, the company has undertaken diverse construction and infrastructure development projects and is currently in the process of upgrading its Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) gradings from 6 Civil Engineering (CE) Potentially Emerging(PE) to 7 Civil Engineering Potentially Emerging and 3 General Building PE to 7 General Building PE, demonstrating the company’s continuous growth and unwavering commitment to excellence.
The business leader’s innovative strategy prioritises talent development and youth empowerment for construction and infrastructure development.
The organisation stated: “Her inspiring journey, marked by passion, innovation, and empowerment, is a shining example of the transformative impact a visionary leader can have.
“Portia’s dedication to empowering women and youth in construction and infrastructure development, coupled with her innovative strategies, has not only elevated her company but has also made a significant difference in the lives of many. She actively addresses barriers, provides unwavering support, and creates opportunities, particularly for women, ensuring that they thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.”
