In the realm of business, the notion of gender empowerment extends far beyond mere representation; it is an essential catalyst for innovation and progress. In my current leadership role in the gaming industry, combined with my previous experience in the banking and financial sectors, I have gained invaluable insights into navigating and succeeding in male-dominated industries.

Despite the strides women have made in the workplace, only 32.2% of senior leadership roles worldwide are held by women. In South Africa, while we have made significant progress, female leaders remain in the minority, making up less than a quarter. Incorporating a female voice in the boardroom goes beyond a box-ticking exercise; it introduces a unique and often under-represented perspective. In industries like sports betting, which are frequently perceived as male-dominated, women in leadership roles help dismantle barriers and develop services that address a more inclusive market.

Diversity in decision-making is crucial

When it comes to decision-making, women bring different viewpoints shaped by varied life experiences, influencing our approach to risk, collaboration, and empathy. One of the most significant challenges women face in male-dominated fields is the misconception that we lack interest or capability. However, we belong in our respective fields and offer immense value. Studies show that companies with gender-diverse leadership are 21% more likely to experience above-average profitability. This correlation underscores the idea that diverse perspectives lead to smarter decision-making. In my day-to-day at the office, I often find that my input challenges conventional thinking, which enriches the decision-making process. This isn’t about competition; it’s about complementing one another’s strengths.

It’s therefore important for women to claim their rightful place in traditionally male-dominated industries. We cannot wait for opportunities to be handed to us; we must take the initiative to create them ourselves. By doing so, we ensure our perspectives are heard, valued, and used to drive innovation that resonates with a broader, more diverse audience.

Throughout my journey, advocacy has been key. I’ve worked tirelessly to ensure my voice is heard and my contributions are recognised, even in environments where women are in the minority. I encourage women to seek out mentors – both male and female- who can help navigate these spaces. Equally important is becoming a mentor yourself, sharing your knowledge and paving the way for the next generation of women leaders.

For any woman aspiring to rise in under-represented industries, my advice is both practical and strategic. Here are some key tips that have guided me along the way:

  • Be strategic: Building awareness of your own capabilities and the opportunities available to you is critical. Actively seek out paths that will lead to future growth, and don’t hesitate to put yourself forward for opportunities that align with your goals.
  • Find a sponsor: Having someone in your corner is invaluable for your professional development. A sponsor is someone who believes in your potential and is willing to advocate for you within the organisation. This person will provide honest feedback about your growth and help you navigate the complexities of your career path.
  • Show up authentically: There is great merit in showcasing your unique qualities as a woman. Being credible and trustworthy in your interactions will earn your respect. Don’t shy away from bringing your authentic self to the table; it’s a powerful asset.
  • Stand in your authenticity: Embrace your unique perspective and voice. The industry needs your insights, and by standing firmly in who you are, you open doors not only for yourself but for those who follow.
  • Champion other women: Rather than seeing other women as competition, recognise the strength in unity. Support and uplift your peers, creating a network of empowerment that benefits everyone.

While we still have a lot of work to do, I remain optimistic about the future. More women are rising to leadership positions across South Africa, particularly in finance and technology. However, the path to equality in industries like sports and gaming remains challenging. We must continue advocating for ourselves, breaking barriers, and ensuring that the next generation of female leaders has a smoother ascent.

In my line of work, I am committed to pushing for greater gender diversity because I understand that businesses thrive when women can lead. The world is beginning to recognise this truth, and together, we can forge a future where gender empowerment becomes the norm, not the exception.
