In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, effective leadership is crucial for navigating change and fostering innovation. Among various leadership styles, transformational leadership stands out for its ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve exceptional results.

What is transformational leadership?

According to Thought Exchange, transformational leadership is a style in which leaders influence, inspire, and encourage employees to drive positive change. Transformational leaders collaborate with teams, prioritising collective goals over personal interests to identify necessary changes and create a guiding vision. They lead by example at an executive level, fostering strong organisational culture, employee ownership, and workplace freedom, therefore motivating individuals without resorting to micromanagement.

Researcher Bernard Bass defines the four main elements to measure success of transformational leadership and how to emulate this type of leader:

Intellectual stimulation: In order to facilitate change, it is pivotal to challenge long-standing beliefs in a company and encourage creativity, critical thinking, innovation and problem-solving. An effective method to instil innovation into an organisation is for leaders to consider establishing an environment that welcomes growth. In addition, leaders can assist employees feel more comfortable by allowing them to explore new ideas.

Idealised influence: As a transformational leader, the most important act is to lead by example. Employees may consider you as a role model for behaviour in all areas of the workplace. It’s about positively influencing employees through commitment to trust, creating transparency and respect.

Individual consideration: It’s important to identify that every employee is a unique individual in the workplace, with specific needs, mentorship requirements and their own contribution to the company. As a leader, consider personalising your coaching and mentorship style to suit each employee. Help them reach their personal and individual goals towards the company.

Inspirational motivation: This refers to encouraging your team, to help them feel invested and committed to the vision of the company. Employees who are committed to these goals, may have a strong sense of purpose.

Here are some advantages of applying transformational leadership according to Indeed:

Inspiring employees

Transformational leadership is centred on enhancing employee motivation, which can drive team members to be more productive and exceed their goals. Leaders can motivate employees through external incentives, such as bonuses or recognition. A transformational leader might inspire motivation by understanding team members on an individual level, including their interests and personal aspirations. When employees feel motivated, they are more likely to achieve their production targets and find greater fulfilment in their work.

Establishment of a clear vision and goal

One key aspect of transformational leadership is the ability to establish a clear vision and set of goals for a company. A well-defined vision provides purpose and direction, guiding team members towards a shared understanding of the project’s significance. By articulating the value of their work, transformational leaders inspire motivation and foster commitment among team members. When individuals believe in the importance of their contributions, they are more likely to strive for excellence and contribute to the team’s success.

Facilitating smooth transitions

When transformational leaders implement extensive transition plans, it’s important to proactively prepare employees for upcoming changes, therefore easing the effects of transitions. These leaders provide additional support to employees, to ease workflow challenges during these transitions and to create transparent communication regarding the company’s expectations.
