In South Africa’s energy sector, women have historically been underrepresented, but we are beginning to see a shift. The industry is evolving, and with it, the realisation that gender inclusion is not just a moral imperative, but a business necessity. As a female executive in the energy space, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of diversity and the critical role that women play in driving innovation, sustainability, and progress. Yet, despite the strides made, there is much work to be done in empowering women and fostering gender equality in business.

The need for gender inclusion

The energy industry, like many others, has long been male-dominated. This is reflective of a broader issue in the business landscape where systemic barriers hinder women’s advancement into leadership roles. Women account for only a fraction of executive positions in South Africa’s energy sector, despite having the skills and expertise to excel. This disparity underscores the importance of creating inclusive environments that allow women to not only participate but thrive.

Gender inclusion is about more than ticking a box – it is about harnessing the full potential of the workforce. Studies consistently show that companies with diverse leadership teams perform better financially, are more innovative, and are better equipped to navigate the complexities of a global marketplace. For the energy industry, where innovation is key to transitioning towards renewable solutions, the inclusion of women is particularly critical. We bring diverse perspectives, unique problem-solving approaches, and a deep understanding of the need for sustainable energy solutions.

Empowerment in the workplace

Empowerment starts with creating pathways for women to enter, grow, and lead in business. This requires not only opening doors but actively addressing the structural challenges that women face – whether it’s gender bias, unequal pay, or lack of mentorship. Women need access to the same opportunities as their male counterparts, and businesses must foster environments where women feel valued, heard, and supported.

For women in business, particularly in industries like energy that are still male-dominated, it’s essential to build networks of support. Mentorship is key. Early in my career, I was fortunate enough to have mentors – both men and women – who advocated for my growth. This support enabled me to navigate the challenges of the energy industry, build confidence, and push boundaries. Women helping women, combined with allies who understand the importance of gender parity, can catalyse real change.

Additionally, businesses must implement policies that promote work-life balance, understanding that women often juggle multiple roles. Flexible working hours, parental leave, and initiatives that support women in leadership are not luxuries – they are necessities for creating a fair and inclusive workplace.

Inspirational tips for success

For women looking to succeed in business, particularly in challenging industries, I offer the following advice:

  1. Own your expertise: Be confident in the knowledge and skills you bring to the table. As women, we often downplay our achievements, but it’s important to own your expertise and trust in your abilities. Whether you’re in the boardroom or out in the field, your voice matters.
  2. Never stop learning: The business landscape, especially in sectors like energy, is constantly evolving. Stay curious and never stop learning. Embrace new technologies, keep up with industry trends, and seek out opportunities for professional development. The more you know, the more value you can bring to your role.
  3. Build resilience: The road to success is rarely smooth. There will be setbacks, and you may face resistance, but resilience is key. Learn from failures, adapt, and keep pushing forward. Remember, perseverance is often what separates those who succeed from those who don’t.
  4. Champion others: As you climb the ladder, reach back and help others. Empower the next generation of women by being a mentor, an advocate, and a role model. The collective strength of women in business lies in our ability to lift each other up.

Conclusion

Inclusion and empowerment are the cornerstones of a thriving business landscape. While progress has been made, the journey toward true gender equality in industries like energy is far from over. As women in business, we have the power to reshape industries, drive innovation, and create more inclusive, diverse work environments. The future of business depends on it, and so does the success of the energy sector. Together, we can build a world where women are not only participants but leaders at every level.
