In the contemporary corporate landscape, the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles and on corporate boards has long been a persistent challenge. However, recent years have seen a surge in efforts to rectify this imbalance, driven by a growing recognition of the proven benefits of a diverse workforce. As women increasingly step into leadership positions, they bring unique perspectives and skills that contribute to the overall success and innovation within their organisations.

The value of a diverse workforce

Research has consistently shown that diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones. A McKinsey report highlighted that companies with greater gender diversity on executive teams were 25% more likely to have above-average profitability than those with lower diversity. This is attributed to the variety of perspectives that diverse teams bring to problem-solving and decision-making processes, fostering creativity and innovation. For women in business, these statistics present an opportunity to advocate for diversity within their organisations and the broader societies they operate in. By engaging in conversations about the benefits of a diverse workforce, I strongly believe, female leaders can help to further shape inclusive policies and practices that pave the way for future generations.

Taking ownership of skills and abilities

As a woman in leadership, it is crucial to take ownership of your skills, abilities, and decisions. This ownership empowers you to take purposeful action and push the boundaries for growth within your organisation. My experience and strategic acumen have shown me the importance of confidence and self-belief in achieving business success. When women leaders take charge of their professional development, they not only enhance their capabilities but also set a powerful example for others. This proactive approach can inspire colleagues to pursue their ambitions and contribute more effectively to their teams and organisations.

Leading with confidence

Confidence is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Leading with confidence instils trust and demonstrates a leader’s commitment to making responsible decisions that prioritise the organisation’s and team’s best interests. Confidence doesn’t mean having all the answers; it’s about being secure in your abilities and willing to take calculated risks. For instance, in times of uncertainty, a confident leader can navigate challenges with poise, providing stability and direction for their team. This assurance fosters a supportive environment where team members feel valued and motivated to perform at their best.

Building networks for growth

Actively developing both personal and professional networks is essential for career advancement and personal growth. These networks serve as valuable sounding boards for career advice, offer diverse perspectives, and provide opportunities for collaboration and mentorship. Women leaders who cultivate strong networks are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the corporate world and leverage new opportunities for growth. Networking also helps in creating a support system that can offer guidance during challenging times. Engaging with other professionals allows for the exchange of ideas, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

Embracing innovation

Innovation is a strategic consideration for any organisation, and women in leadership should not shy away from proposing new ideas, even if they seem risky. The willingness to innovate and think creatively is crucial for staying competitive in today’s fast-paced business environment. In my current roles as Head of Industrials Henkel Adhesives South Africa, I have noticed even more that by championing innovation, women leaders can drive their organisations towards greater efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.

Staying positive in adversity

One of the key characteristics of successful women in leadership is their ability to stay positive, especially during difficult times. How a leader responds to uncertainty and failure can significantly impact their team’s morale and resilience. A positive attitude, even in the face of adversity, demonstrates strength of character and can inspire confidence and perseverance among team members. For instance, maintaining a positive outlook during a corporate restructuring or market downturn can help mitigate anxiety and keep the team focused on long-term goals. This resilience is critical for navigating the inevitable ups and downs of the business world.

The contemporary corporate landscape is gradually transforming, with increasing recognition of the importance of gender diversity in leadership roles. Women in business have a unique opportunity to advocate for and contribute to this transformation by taking ownership of their skills, leading with confidence, building robust networks, embracing innovation, and maintaining positivity in the face of challenges. As more women step into leadership positions, I am convinced, they not only drive business success but also pave the way for a more inclusive and dynamic corporate environment.
