In business, perception often shapes reality. For women entrepreneurs and business leaders, the journey to industry leadership is often riddled with barriers such as gender bias, lack of access to funding, and the struggle for visibility. Yet, in an era where public perception can be strategically managed, public relations (PR) serves as a powerful tool to not only amplify a woman’s presence but also establish her as a formidable authority in her field.
PR is no longer just about press releases and crisis management; it is about crafting a captivating narrative that resonates with your target audiences (yes – your target audiences, not every single human being on the planet), builds credibility, and positions entrepreneurs as thought leaders. Here are a few tips on how women business leaders can leverage PR to shift from being perceived as underdogs, positioning themselves as industry powerhouses.
Own your narrative
One of the biggest challenges for women in business is overcoming stereotypes that undermine their leadership. PR allows female entrepreneurs to shape their own stories, positioning themselves as innovators, problem-solvers, and pioneers in their industries.
Is it important to be authentic, and own your own story? Audiences connect with real stories. Whether it’s the challenges you faced in launching your business, the resilience that pushed you forward, or the passion that drives your brand, a compelling origin story is what will set you apart.
It is also important to share some of the wealth of knowledge you possess. Publishing op-eds, contributing to industry blogs, and being featured in interviews allow you to share insights and showcase your expertise.
Platforms like LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Instagram and Threads offer opportunities to humanise your brand, highlight achievements, and share valuable content that establishes you as a leader.
Build strategic media relationships
A well-crafted media strategy can significantly elevate your brand’s credibility. Women entrepreneurs must proactively seek media opportunities rather than waiting for the press to find them. If your brand is not visible, the media has no way of knowing you exist. The same applies for business opportunities. Positioning yourself unlocks both media opportunities, and business opportunities.
When engaging with the media, always keep in mind that journalists receive countless pitches daily. Ensure yours is compelling by focusing on the value your story provides to their audience. Speaking at conferences, being part of panel discussions, and participating in networking events can attract media attention and establish your thought leadership. If resources allow, it is always best to work with a PR agency. Their expertise can help tailor effective media strategies and secure high-profile coverage, leaving you to focus more on what you do best; which is your core business.

Position yourself as an expert
Becoming an authority in your industry requires more than just being good at what you do; it requires visibility and influence. PR offers multiple avenues to position yourself as a trusted expert. From Guest Appearances on Podcasts to speaking on webinars, these platforms allow for in-depth discussions on topics relevant to your expertise and help you reach targeted audiences. You can also write Whitepapers and Reports. Industry insights, research, and data-driven articles enhance your credibility and make you a go-to resource in your field.
Also apply for industry awards and nominations. Winning or even being nominated boosts your credibility and adds weight to your personal brand.
Leverage influencer and peer networks
In my opinion, collaboration is the most powerful PR tool, and leveraging your networks can amplify your reach and credibility. Engage in partnerships, mentorships, and collaborations with other successful female entrepreneurs that align with your brand and values, andwould see value in collaborating with you. Collaborations need to be win-win.
Membership in business organisations and women’s leadership groups also enhances credibility and opens doors to media and business opportunities. If you have a product-based business, working with influencers who align with your brand can expand your audience reach.
Crisis management and reputation building
In today’s world, reputation is everything. Women in business must be proactive in managing their brand image and navigating challenges. Regularly track mentions and reviews of your business and personal brand to ensure your public perception aligns with your brand vision. Although you cannot always control what other people say about your brand (both true and untrue), what you can control is what you say about your own brand and business. Always address negative publicity strategically. Responding professionally and transparently to criticism can mitigate damage and even enhance trust.
Using PR to attract investment and business growth
Access to funding is a significant hurdle for many women entrepreneurs. PR can serve as a powerful tool in attracting investors, clients, and business opportunities. Don’t – be afraid to showcase your business growth and success stories. Do – highlight milestones, customer testimonials, and innovative aspects of your business.
If you are looking for investors or looking to attract the right business partners, engage with business media, industry publications and financial publications. Being featured in business magazines, finance blogs, and investment forums increases credibility and potential investor interest.
Final thoughts
One thing I hope you take away from reading this article is that public relations is no longer a luxury reserved for large corporations, it is a necessity for women entrepreneurs and women-leaders who want to establish themselves as industry leaders. By leveraging storytelling, media relationships, thought leadership, and strategic partnerships, female business owners can break barriers, gain the recognition they deserve, and unlock more opportunities for themselves.
The journey from underdog to industry leader is not a quick one, but with a well-executed PR strategy and consistency, women entrepreneurs can create their own narratives, command influence, and leave a lasting legacy in their industries and communities. The key is to be intentional, consistent, and unapologetically visible. After all, if you don’t tell your story, someone else will (and they most likely not tell it the way you want it to be heard). There is no growth for you, your family, your community and future women in your playing small.
