Navigating a male-dominated industry: A journey of innovation and compassion for community empowerment
By Raine St.Claire
Challenges serve as fertile ground for innovation, and few exemplify this better than Glynn Mashonga, the driving force behind Globescope Security Solutions, a 100% black woman-owned EME (Exempted Micro Enterprise) founded in 2005, but with the capacity and capability to compete head-to-head with much larger established historical suppliers when it comes to price, quality and service.
Raised in Mitchell’s Plain, her journey from adversity to success is marked by determination and compassion. Rooted in her community’s struggles, Glynn leverages technology to combat unemployment and enhance safety.
A purpose-driven journey unfolded for her. Initially focused on employing physical guards to maximise job opportunities, Glynn’s compassionate nature led her towards the technology-driven aspect of security. Armed with a background in computer programming and a resilient spirit, she swiftly transitioned to the tech side, marking a profound transformation.
Navigating a male-dominated industry presented unique challenges, yet Glynn overcame her initial lack of technical expertise by mastering installations and wiring intricacies. She evolved into both a skilled technician and a savvy business mind, earning respect that transcended gender norms. This positioned her as a qualified entrepreneur capable of running the multifaceted aspects of a safety and security business, driven by collaboration and innovation.
From a small business to a tech-powered force for impact, Glynn’s mission is to transform communities, aiming to leverage technology and AI to address safety and unemployment. She envisions an app utilising AI for licence plates, fingerprints, and facial recognition to bridge the gap between job seekers and local businesses, fostering community employment.

Her ambition extends to AI-driven manufacturing, democratising access to the latest security technology for areas in need. Engaged in community initiatives, she mentors young individuals in financial growth and skill utilisation. Glynn envisions AI and technology playing a pivotal role in enhancing safety across industries, empowering individuals to become entrepreneurs and innovators.
Though initially resistant, Glynn recognised collaboration as essential for growth. She opened up her vision and partnered with experts in physical guarding, leading to exponential expansion. This partnership boosted the company’s workforce to 1200, even establishing a branch in Zambia, showcasing the power of shared ambitions and mentorship she valued and amplified through the Innovator Trust journey.
“They invest in every aspect of who you are, including your mental health.”
Empowered by Vodacom, Glynn seamlessly advanced from the Innovator Trust’s Enterprise Development Programme to the Supplier Development Programme, unlocking significant opportunities, including recognition as a key Vodacom supplier. Her relentless commitment to personal and business growth underscores her profound dedication to purpose-driven work.
