The impacts of climate change in recent years have highlighted the importance of embedding sustainability in the workplace. Here are ways to promote an eco-friendly environment:
Preserve energy
Consider reducing your power usage – switch off computers, lights and other electronics when not in use. Upgrade to energy efficient LED light bulbs and appliances around the building. Encourage employees to opt for energy saving features or techniques, such as using natural light.
Implement sustainability policies
According to Earth.org when implementing strategic efforts towards long- term goals, policies should outline the creation of eco-friendly spaces and plans as to how this will be achieved. Implementing environmental policies and procedures will help to improve a practice of sustainability in the workplace.
Reduce waste, promote recycling
Recycling and waste reduction are imperative methods of creating feasible eco-friendly workplaces. Researchers report that out of an estimated 59 million tonnes of waste produced in South Africa, only 10 percent of it is recycled resulting in the other 90 percent laying in landfills. Encourage employees to reduce food wastage, including making recycling bins more accessible. An organisation such as the World Wide Fund for Nature ( WWF), collaborates with businesses to generate a joint effort to facilitate innovation and resources for lasting environmental impact.

Knowledge is power
An effective way to empower your employees is through broadening their recycling knowledge. Provide training and educational resources to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and eco-friendly practices by facilitating seminars, workshops and casual sessions to inform employees about conserving energy, recycling and sustainable living. In addition, providing a platform for them to share ideas and suggestions towards an eco-friendly workplace could have lucrative results.
Forward thinking
Mastercard Chief Digital Officer Jorn Lambert says companies, consumers and communities must work together to have an impact on addressing climate change.
“By embedding sustainability into the very fabric of our business, from pay-on-demand solar energy products to tools that help inform consumer spending-we can unlock the power of our network, reaching billions of consumers and partners, to create positive change for the environment.”
According to Mastercard:
- 81 percent of adults in South Africa are more conscious of their carbon footprint since COVID-19
- Three quarters of local companies recognise the importance of applying more eco-friendly strategies than before
- 98 percent of South Africans are willing to take personal action to combat environmental and sustainability issues, as compared to the global 85 percent
- 39 percent of consumers across the globe want brands to focus on the health and wellbeing of their employees, 34 percent reduce air and water pollution
- Over half of adults buy less impulsively since COVID 19 and are more conscious of their purchases. 59 percent of women are leading the trend and with only 40 percent of males.
