Creating an environment based on concise and effective communication is easier said than done. With evolving technologies, hybrid work and innovation, transparency in the flow of information between employees and management is imperative.

Here are six ways managers can encourage communication in the workplace:

Connecting management with employees

According to Walden University,  management transparency in an organisation is imperative, however this must go hand in hand with maintaining professionalism. Collaboration regarding decisions affecting employees (which may include some challenges the organisation is facing) is a great way to create inclusion. Opening up to employees develops a level of trust which facilitates positive communication. No one wants to work in a place where they feel excluded or ignored and coming up with solutions together as a team, ensures buy-in and employees’ commitment towards their role.

Identify the positives

Being an observant leader creates a platform to identify the strengths and weaknesses of employees. One of the most impactful methods of daily recognition any leader can give is a simple “thank you”. When an employee feels appreciated it encourages commitment in the workplace. This sort of recognition is not limited to professional efforts but also personal strengths. Why not reward employees by creating a monthly award, to recognise top performers or notable accomplishments.

Listening is a skill

Take a moment to pause and listen with intent in order to connect on a professional level with your staff. Depending on a team’s dynamics, some employees may feel intimidated raising concerns or ideas in meetings with larger groups. Set aside one- on- ones to check in with employees, thereby building healthy relationships to ensure the growth and productivity of the company.

Assign tasks with clarity

According to Master Southern Africa, when managers are assigning tasks, it is key to provide clear context and details in order to set expectations. In addition, creating a safe environment for employees to ask the necessary questions, without fear of ill-treatment. This includes deadlines, tasks and assignments in the workplace.

Encourage open communication

Petty disagreements, gossip and victimising targeted individuals all serve to create a toxic work environment and negatively impacts the goal of creating a workplace where employees are at liberty to express their opinions, creativity and thoughts. In order to avoid this toxicity, a platform for  open dialogue ensures everyone has an opportunity to express themselves in a positive, generative manner.

Respect

Leading by example facilitates a culture of common respect between management and employees. Servant leadership  results in flexibility, empathy, stewardship and respect. Mutual respect  is a key ingredient in the creation of a workplace that everyone looks forward to going to every day.
