This exceptional inventory of women spearheading major businesses in Africa, based on rigorous data-driven research supplied by Bloomberg and sponsored by the Standard Bank Group, was unveiled during a virtual event in the 1st Quarter 2023.

In this selection, 93 women from 17 different countries have been recognised, each meeting the stringent criteria of substantial revenue or significant market capitalisation. South Africa takes the lead with 40 female CEOs, while Nigeria contributes 12, and Egypt, Ghana, and Kenya each have 6 representatives. 

 

1. Nompumelelo Zikalala (44), CEO, Kumba Iron Ore Ltd (South Africa)

Johannesburg Stock Exchange 💰 $6.9-billion 

Nompumelelo, originally from Durban, is a passionate advocate for the mining industry. Committed to mentoring and empowering the next generation of mining professionals and actively promoting diversity and inclusion in the industry, she supports initiatives for equal opportunities. Nompumelelo firmly believes that a diverse workforce fosters innovation and sustainability in mining. She serves as a Trustee of the University of Johannesburg Trust and chairs the Private Sector Forum of the South African National AIDS Council. In 2018, she received the Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining award in Mayfield, London.

 

2. Mpumi Madisa (43), CEO, Bidvest Group (South Africa)

Johannesburg Stock Exchange 💰 $6.6-billion 

Mpumi’s 2020 Bidvest appointment as the first black African woman CEO of a Johannesburg Stock Exchange top 40 company, marked a pivotal step in South African gender transformation. Her blend of traditional and forward-thinking strategies, along with her visionary leadership, has positioned Bidvest for global expansion across various industries. As a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, she champions women’s empowerment and equal opportunities, earning recognition as an influential figure in business. Wholeheartedly committed to Bidvest, she also uplifts her community through active participation in philanthropic endeavours that support education, entrepreneurship, and social development across South Africa.

 

3. Bertina Engelbrecht (60), CEO, Clicks Group Ltd (South Africa)

Johannesburg Stock Exchange 💰 $2.6-billion 

Bertina’s journey, from graduate to visionary CEO of Clicks Group Ltd., is inspiring. Her leadership transformed the company and the retail/healthcare industry. Joining Clicks in 2006 as HR director, she quickly rose to COO and corporate affairs director. Leading Clicks into healthcare, her guidance turned Clicks pharmacies into trusted medical sources. Her January 2022 appointment was historic, making her the first female CEO and the first black woman to lead a JSE-listed retail group. Her leadership made Clicks an industry leader, while her work empowering women and supporting education gained recognition and respect.
